Repairing Relationships with Somatic Psychotherapy

In this interview we are joined by Heidi Schaul-Yoder, Holistic Psychotherapist, Certified Gestalt Therapist and New York State Licensed Psychoanalyst, who talks to us about how Somatic Psychotherapy can help us repair our relationships, and reconnect the multiple parts of ourselves to find balance and harmony in our lives.

Here is snippet of the information Heidi shares with us in her Mindbody Insights interview:

Q - “What does it look like when we have that sort of unresolved trauma that’s maybe speaking to us?”

A - “[…] If someone sort of like find themselves habitually in relationships with some emotionally unavailable people for just one example. But you know I really like how Peter Levine, who’s the founder of Somatic Experiencing, he says “trauma isn’t a problem to be solved, it’s a presence awaiting witnessing”. So to me, it’s like there is this something, there’s this presence that’s always when I’m in a session with somebody, there’s this something, there’s that awaiting witnessing, but is also kind of maybe hiding out and protected. Right. So because in some way, I think we, we know on some level, if we’ve been through trauma, that there was something missing, there was sort of like this lack. And we might feel that in ourselves is like, we often interpret it as I’m lacking, or there’s something wrong with me. […]”

About Somatic Psychotherapy Sessions

Your body contains within it all of your history, traumas, past hurts, future longings and deepest wisdom. It knows what you need to feel whole and complete. By befriending and listening to our body’s messages, we tap into our powerful inner knowing and guidance system. We’ll work directly with your physiology and nervous system, not only the story of what has happened, in order to gently resolve stored traumas at their root and gain access to an embodied intelligence that goes way beyond what we can “know” with the rational mind.

This work is inherently creative, a collaboration that evolves moment to moment. We’ll explore together what is happening in the present moment and what is wanting to emerge, and incorporate body awareness, visualization, breathwork, mindfulness practices, inner child work and Gestalt therapy methods to allow for deep integration and change to be felt on a cellular level.
