Relaxation - the Forgotten Key to Healing
In this interview we are joined by Alison Roehs, Licensed Acupuncturist and Massage Therapist, who shares with us how relaxation as a treatment in and of itself is often overlooked. By guiding her patients to find a relaxed state in the beginning of her sessions, Alison’s unique combination of acupuncture and massage become even more effective for treating mind and body.
Here is snippet of the information Alison shares with us in her Mindbody Insights interview:
Q - “What kind of conditions do you see as having the potential to be positively impacted by these treatment methods that interweave relaxation?”
A - “A lot of things, not everything. I’m not saying that what I do is a pancia, but a lot of things. I like to specifically look at things that are under the purview of autoimmune issues, there’s a lot of digest, like long-term chronic digestive issues. Basically, if anything has the word “chronic” in there, I want to know about it. I visualize that as the knot to untangle. Chronic pain is huge. There is a lot of psychology that goes along with chronic pain. Not that I am a mental therapist but being able to put yourself in touch with that chronic pain, think about how did this start? How have I been treating it since I’ve gotten it? How has the sensation changed? Is it pain or is it an ache? Is it like a sharp thing or is it kind of a dull rub every day? What makes it feel better? I mean, I think by getting the body to relax and be curious about itself, that’s when we can really start healing.”
About Acupuncture Sessions
Acupuncture consists of the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body along pathways known as meridians. These meridians act as a highway for the flow of information in the form of blood, nerves, fascia, hormones, etc., and connect the internal organs to the rest of the organism. When one of these pathways becomes blocked, internal pressure either builds up like a blocked pipe or becomes empty like a deflated balloon, which can then be responsible for any number of illnesses.
By understanding the relationship of the organs to the extremities via the meridian pathways, one can then use acupuncture needles on specific points to balance the overall system. By draining pressure where it is excessive and adding pressure where it is low, the system is able to return to homeostasis and the disease resolves. Massage therapy is used in combination with acupuncture to complement and support this healing process.
